As pointless as it may seem to think this way I couldn’t help but swap the release dates of the iPhone and Windows Phone 7, wandering if the roles would have changed. Apple released the iPhone in June of 2007 showing the world how simple design could get things done. Fast forward to November of 2010 and look at Windows Phone 7. While the interface is nothing alike you have to admit there is a striking resemblance on how they both launched. Each company taking a risk in bringing something new and innovative into the mobile smartphone market. This brings us to the question at hand. Had Microsoft launched Windows Phone 7 back in June...

It is no secret that music is a large part of my life. Listening to music helps me step away from the corporate hustle and bustle that I deal with on a daily basis. The music industry has changed significantly over the last decade. We have shifted from digital a model where we purchase our digital media from services like that of Amazon MP3 or Apple’s wildly successful iTunes Store to a now popular subscription based services like rdio and Zune Pass. Both have their benefits, depending on your needs either might work well in your use case. Over the last 14 days I have pushed both services to their limits looking for the golden...

Day 2 - Growing more accustomed to the Android operating system things are moving smoothly now. On day one we discussed how important email was to me, that given my love for the BlackBerry email solution, it was now time to investigate this on the Android platform. Armed with five email accounts, two Google ( Gmail ), one corporate exchange, and two IMAP business accounts, let us see if Android could be a viable replacement for my loved BlackBerry. Underneath first with Google’s own Gmail service, we look into the setup and experience. Setup, or lack thereof is one of the easiest I have experienced. This being due to the fact that upon entering your...

As many of you know I typically use a BlackBerry device to manage the business side of my life. From email, contacts, calendar, and task management I have relied on BlackBerry for the simple reason that it works well and is trouble free. I will be the first to admit that there is a gap that BlackBerry cannot fill. When it comes to media, being consumption or production, BlackBerry is usually my last choice. For this very reason I carry a second phone, usually the iPhone 4 or Nokia N8, both which fill this gap nicely. Recently I have had the oportunity to use the T-Mobile G2, which if you aren’t aware, is an Android...

Turned on the radio lately, then surely you have heard at least one commercial touting the latest and greatest smartphone from one of the self promoted “fastest” networks around. It seems that we can’t go a month without a new model coming out that supposedly trumps all previous models. Sure, this is how marketing works but in the process what are we telling the consumers about our products? What if every month a new type of ketchup came out claiming to be better than the last revision. I don’t know about you but I wouldn’t have a clue what type of ketchup to purchase much less which one I actually liked to eat. One might...

Every day more and more consumers are upgrading to “smartphones”. Some knowingly, others because their friend’s friend has one just like it and they feel compelled to fit in. Will the time come when dumb-phones no longer exist? Even today if we evaluated the usage of the so called feature phones you would easily see that the majority of them can handle social feeds, email and more. So one has to question where is the line drawn when it comes to defining the categorization of mobile phones. In the past these notions were always based on what operating system the phone was running. Now that this line has been blurred is there really a difference?...

Blackberry hears its users and moves towards an “all new” user interface. It has a hint of old school Blackberry look and feel to it with a dabble of salt and pepper but I wouldn’t call it an all new look and feel. To me this is more of an enhancement but either way it’s a very welcome addition to the Blackberry platform. What do you think? Is this what you have been waiting for or are you disappointed?
Image provided by nowsourcing.com As I move from phone to phone exploring all the different choices we have in the application stores (Ovi, Apple App Store, Android Marketplace) there is one thing that they all share in common. Each lacks personalization and personality. Some could argue that having the ability to have applications suggested to you based on what you browse or purchase is a form of personalization but this is not enough to make it a compelling experience for most. How many times have you found an application you would like to try but don’t have the time or resources to do so? What if the application store gave you the ability to add...
