In a recent article one of the leading game developers, Gameloft, talked about how they were pulling back from developing games on the Android platform. This made me ask myself why do people choose certain platforms? Will the fact that Gameloft chooses not to develop games for the Android platform defer you from choosing to purchase future Android phones?

When I look at mobile platforms my main influence is a well rounded platform that allows me to express myself and share my life and work with others. Below I have compiled a list of the top 5 reasons I choose the platforms I use.

  1. Communications (Email/SMS/MMS including both work and personal all in one device)
  2. Media Creation (Great camera for both photography and video to capture the moments that are important to me)
  3. Available Services (Having a great camera is worthless if you can’t share these moments when they happen)
  4. Applications (I could care less about 100,000 apps. I care about the 10-15 that I actually use.)
  5. Media Consumption (Those that know me know how much I love movies and music. Having the ability to watch movies and listen to music on a mobile platform is very important to me. Wide range of playback formats is a big deal to me)
While this is obviously not the only reason why I choose platforms it has the biggest impact from a high level. I’m curious what influences you to use the platform of your choice? The gates are open.
